NEWEST UPDATE!!!

GREAT NEWS!

I know that this Mad project already has been "wrapped up", but I just had to post this good news here.  Today, I applied for funding from Student Council.  I made a short speech and requested for money to buy some chess boards for our club, since I supply all the chess boards and other people supply some other stuff.  We thought that it would be nice to have boards just for our club and that way, it could benefit the students in the future.  The result was POSITIVE!!  There was an unnaimous decision to grant us funding and the full amount that we requested, $400HK.  YAY!! So there is the good news, and we hope that this club will continue to flourish in the future.

Wrap Up Reflection

I thoroughly enjoyed doing this MAD Project.  The School started off with and unofficial Chess Club and  now we have made it an official one.  In fact, we get a picture for the year book as well.  (thanks to Mr Ward who mentioned us during a meeting)  This project was an enjoyable one as I learned how to organize a club at ICS.  We handed in all the paper work and it is recognized by the year book staff.  I think that this was a project well done and I am extremely proud of accomplishing such a task.

Throughout the year, I taught people how to play different kinds of chess as well as chess notation, which is used to record chess moves in a game.  From teaching these people, I learned that I needed to speak as clearly as possible and elaborate in detail because the person I am speaking to is completely ignorant of what I am talking about.  I am not good at expressing my ideas clearly but, by teaching others, I got to improve my interaction skills with different people.  I also got to exercise patience since it was kind of frustrating teaching people then having them forget what I told them earlier.  Furthermore, I got to develop my leadership skills as being head of Chess Club.  We had to go out and encourage people to come and also, we had to use our organization skills to find a place where our club could settle during lunch.  It took great perseverance once we got the club underway because not many people came at first.  However, the good thing is that we have more members than when we started and are recognized by the school.

Overall, I think that this project was quite successful as we managed to make a difference to ICS by help organizing a Chess Club that did not exist before.  During Wednesdays lunch nowadays, people come in and drop by to play a game of chess before P block or they just come in and hang around.  I think that we have made a tremendous impact for all those chess players at ICS and also for the rest of the school.

Today was quite fun.  We had a club banner put up for Chess Club!  My sister made a banner for her Computer Graphics project and decided to help advertise Chess Club.  Naturally, I encouraged her and she made the banner.  I printed it out on Tuesday and we hung it up in the hallway for all to see.  The banner stretched across the hallway in from of the door to room 520.  We also had some people that were finishing their Precalc catapult project in our room while chess club was join on.  I brought some connect four today as a break from chess and we had a great time.

Today for Chess Club, we were interupted by the martial arts perormance that was happening donwstairs in the podium.  It was very entertaining to watch and we bailed all of our chess games just to watch the show.  There was still one game of Chinese chess that kept on playing and basically, that was all .  A lot of the members went downstairs to watch the martial arts show and we coulnd't help watching it ourselves since we had a nice view from the fifth floor.....

Today we had Chess club again.  I didn't bring my camera today so we don't have any pictures.  We played chess, Chinese chess, Goh, and 陆军其 today.  It was loads of fun.  We had a great time.  Jeffrey won the 陆军其 game against Shing Chi.  I was refferee for their game.  The ref says who's piece wins or loses in this game because both sides cannot look at the opponents pieces.  I was an awesome day!

Jeffrey joined our MAD project today alothough he had been coming ever since we started Chess Club.  Today was the first meeting after the Christmas break.  We had a great time and someone brought in a Chinese chess game called " 陆军棋" and we(I) had fun playing.  It's is like a capture the flag game where the other person can't see your pieces. Three people are needed to play the game.  One to be judge for determining who's piece wins a "fight".  There is an order for all the pieces so the one that is bigger wins unless they hit a landmine or a bomb.  The game is quite interesting and fun.
